Peace talks end in victory for Iran and Assad


Syrian peace talks ended in a significant victory for the regime and above all its military backer Iran yesterday as Tehran was given a formal role in overseeing an end to the fighting for the first time.

Two days of talks in Astana, Kazakhstan’s capital, concluded with Iran joining Russia and Turkey as a “guarantor” of the ceasefire that has been in place since December 30, which the rebels claim the regime and supporting Iranian militias have repeatedly breached.

The three guarantors will meet again in Astana soon to establish the enforcement mechanism but its details — or whether it would involve monitors — were left vague.
